Jim and Phyllis are leaving for home tomorrow, so we are leaving the Keys to head for the airport hotel. However, Phyllis indicated that they had never visited the Everglades so Paul spent some time trying to arrange for a boat ride through the glades. Unfortunately, this is last minute and he ended up spending several hours on the phone trying to find one with availability. Fortunately, he eventually succeeded.
We eventually
boarded our airboat with Captain Billy and headed off.
The water was so calm in some places that the reflections of the clouds were wonderful.
We stopped to visit a boat-tailed grackle who was a friend of Billy. We fed her Cheetos. How bad. However, Billy said he had a dozen or more partial bags of bird seed to feed the birds but the only thing they would eat was the Cheetos. She was good at posing for pictures.
Later we also were visited by a male grackle. Their coloring is nothing alike. He was also pretty good at posing...but mainly he just wanted to hang around hoping for more treats.
Other sights:
Alligators. Billy seemed to be friends with one. With Billy's encouragement it came right up to the boat and let Billy pet him. The rest of us passed on the petting.
Water Lilies
Great White Egret
Heron with fish (from a far distance)
Purple Gallinule walking around the lily pads
Captain Billy stripped some sawgrass so we could see the web of material inside. He said it was the inspiration for gauze.
We all thoroughly enjoyed this sunny day in the Everglades. We were at the hotel by late afternoon.
